• Illegal alluvial gold mining
Water and the bottom sand is dredged and filtered to extract the gold. Mercury is used to extract the gold from the filtering carpets. This is of course an environmental disaster where the geology of areas is abused and the environment poisoned. Each gold miner may be on a small scale, but since there are so many of them, the damage is very large scale.
• When I was there we discovered about 8 snares and a change of behaviour among the animals not far from Matambwe. Animals were skittish and according to local employees they didn’t use to be. Possibly the number of workers in the park related to the dam construction has increased the need for bush meat. Here a wildebeest had died in a snare but the meat had not been taken care of by the poachers. Selous GR, Tanzania. © Daniel Rosengren

 • An interaction between 3 Ethiopian Wolves and a domestic dog playing out. It is likely that the wolves had killed this baby sheep and that the dog (unusually large for Ethiopia) then took it from them. While the dog was feeding on the sheep the wolves were circling, trying to eat scraps. The dog was big enough to keep the wolves at a distance and even chased them away at times. Domestic dogs are serious competitors for food and spread disease like rabies and canine distemper to wolves. Web Valley, Bale Mountains National Park, Ethiopia. © Daniel Rosengren
