The leaf blowers are used to blow away leaves and make a firebreak, but also to physically push the fire backwards into the already burned area and thus put it out.
There is also a photo of one of our people setting a backfire with a “fire-dripper", which is then blown with the leaf blowers into the main fire.
Most of the firefighting consists of preparing firebreaks before the main fire arrives, and then monitoring the firebreak, using backpack water pumps or “abafadores” (a large rubber square on a handle, used to beat down flames and deprive them of oxygen) to put out any spot fires that jump the firebreak.
